Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year 2019

Category: Celebration

Dear colleagues, dear students,

We do not have to go far to find joy in our heart and soul, we just have to look around and direct our thoughts to ourselves, a little bit to our dearest ones, colleagues, friends. Thus the world will become small and big at the same time, precisely as it is felt in tourism. Others may forget the things you say, but they will never forget how they felt beside you in 2019. May everyone feel good and cosy around you, because it will mean that in 2019 you are going to be healthy and content.

Dean of UP FTŠ Turistica

Information event for exchange programmes

On Monday 10 December 2018 we organised the third Turistica ExChanges You – LIVE event, where students of Turistica, who experienced their mobility abroad and foreign students, who are currently on their exchange students programme at Turistica, shared their experience at European universities to those, who are interested to live it themselves.

Many students joined us to discover their possibilities offered by the Erasmus+ programme and to gain useful information about the studies and life at Erasmus+ partner universities around Europe. Turistica currently operates in the Erasmus+ and Ceepus mobility schemes. The University of Primorska collaborates with universities outside the boundaries of the EU, for example: San Diego State University (USA), Ball State University (USA), Indiana (USA), SUIBE (China), JAIST (Japan), University of Queensland (Australia) and others.

Mobility is the perfect way for the students to grow on a personal level, gain valuable life experience, meet new cultures and accept new challenges, which can later on be useful while searching for an employment. The number of our students, who choose the exchange student programme, is increasing alongside the number of foreign students, who choose Turistica and completes part of their studies here. The latter teamed up on Monday as well and presented their destinations.

We thank all the participants for their collaboration and wish everyone a lot of successful mobilities in 2019!

Workshop in frame of the QNeSt project

On Friday 23 November 2018 Turistica hosted the workshop in frame of the QNeST project (Quality Network on Sustainable Tourism). The main guest was Henrique Ramos, an environmentalist from the Azores, who is currently visiting Slovenia.

The main goal of the project is to raise the quality standards in the field of sustainable tourism, promotion activities and networking between tourism providers. Henrique Ramos talked about sea pollution, the problem of microplastics and waste in connection with tourism. The latter is a double-edged sword, because on one part, it raises the economy and on the other, it represents a high risk for the environment.

Like Slovenia, the Azores do not want mass tourism. They want to be a green destination. The project manager dr. Marko Kukanja stressed the brand GREEN SLOVENIA, which is already well-established and popular around the world.

In the frame of the workshop, Turistica organised a promotional event as well, visiting the fish farm Fonda, which is well-known as an example of good practice – not only for networking between tourism providers but also arranging sustainable tourism. With the Atlas vessel, powered by solar energy, we visited the pools and shellfish farm. We found out why the Piran sea brass is so special and of delicious taste, how the sea farm carefully chooses the offspring, how and with what fish are fed, how long a sea brass grows, how long do mussels live and how to really recognise fresh fish.

We kindly invite you to attend the 2nd Workshop in frame of the project QNeST (Quality Network on Sustainable Tourism), which will be carried out on 23 November 2018 at UP FTŠ Turistica, classroom nr. 001.

In the first part we will host the professional in the fisheries sector Henrique Ramos, who will hold a lecture about Sustainable development of fisheries areas (in English language), and in the second part Jana Apih (GoodPlace) will present the Green scheme of Slovenian tourism (in Slovenian Language).

Orientation days for international students

The end of September was very lively at Turistica, especially in the spirit of internationality. On Thursday 27 September 2018, on World Tourism Day, the rich programme of the orientation days for foreign students at the University of Primorska had its final events at Turistica. We welcomed all the foreign students, who will occupy the lecture halls of the University of Primorska from 1 October on. The students attended the opening f the photography exhibition Kiitos Suomi (Thank you Finland) and the “Who are my fellow students?” fair.

The author of the exhibition Ana Stergulc brought us to Finland and showed us the period she spent there as an Erasmus+ student. With the exhibition she displayed Finland’s beauty and the highlights of the best period of her studies, and consequently encourage students to go on such journeys themselves.

The fair “Who are my fellow students?” features the international students of the University of Primorska, who presented their countries, cultures and customs with characteristic food and drinks, which they brought here. Thus there was a wonderful smell of delicious foreign treats. At the end, we surprised the students with the typical Istrian dish bobiči.
